New York
Day 2

Sunday 24th October

Emie & I were booked on a bus tour as part of our package and Enid and Freda managed to get on the same tour.  We took off at 9am for a 3 hour tour of NY city, stopping at the Rockefeller Centre, would love to be here to see the Christmas tree being lit but that's not till next month.  We also stopped at St Paul's chapel, the small church that survived 9/11 and had a walk round the church to see the memorials inside.  There was a service going on so we had to walk very quietly and couldn't take any photo's.  The site of the twin towers is no longer referred to as 'Ground Zero', it is now called One World Trade Centre.  Our next stop was South Cove, Battery Park for a glimpse of Lady Liberty and back to the city centre.

The four of us then decided we'd venture out on the train and go back to Battery Park to catch the Staten Island Ferry.  We ran into trouble after we bought our tickets.  Enid's ticket wouldn't scan but that didn't stop us, Emie swiped her ticket and let Enid through then she crawled under the barrier.  You didn't hear me say that.
When we arrived at Staten Island we had to get off the ferry and wait in the terminal for the next one back.  We didn't have tour tickets for the island, they were part of another tour that took in Staten Island and Ellis Island, and we didn't have the time to do it all.  Enid, Freda and I were booked on a night cruise which we had to catch further up the river.

Once back on the mainland Emie took off on her own leaving the 3 more mature ladies to do our own thing.  We headed off in search of a way to get up to the next terminal we needed, only transport available that we knew would get us there on time was a taxi.  I was surprised at how far we had to go, no way we could have walked that distance; 6.1 miles (9.8 km).  The cruise was 90 minutes round the harbour with Waterway Tours, if you like you can check out the map here.

After dinner at a pub near the hotel we headed back to the hotel to say our goodbyes.  A really great trip all round and some really nice people to spend the time with.

Here ends the Fall Colours New England tour, but I can't guarantee it is the end of trees.  I've still got more of the east coast to go and the colours are more than likely heading down that way.  Lucky you  :-)
