Vermont to Lake Placid

Thursday 21st October

Woke to rain this morning but got to have a 1/2 hour sleep in once more. I'd better explain the first photo before I go any further.  Tom had a basket of lollies (sweets/candy/toffees) on the dash that we could help ourselves to.  Enid thought she'd have a bit of fun with them and Ric from Mississippi.  Between Tom and Ric poor Enid had her hands full, but she handled them both very well.

Our first stop on the way to Lake Placid was Lake Champlain, Vermont side.  It was a beautiful area and I can imagine what it would look like in sunshine - of course the sun dial wasn't functioning too well in the rain.

On the way to the ferry we passed by Shelburne Farms, the Vanderbilt name crops up again.  I took a few pics of things I found interesting also.  An odd shaped car, I've seen quite a few of these around, and, some of the Thanksgiving decorations around the place.  Hope you find them interesting too.

On arriving at the Lake Champion ferry dock, it was pouring with rain and we were rather early, about 40 minutes early, but we did get to watch another ferry come in.  No way our coach would have fit on that one though, the opening was only high enough for cars.  Our ferry arrived and it had an open side on it for taller vehicles.  By now the rain had eased a little so we could get off the coach and take some photo's, it didn't last long though.  Lake Champlain was once the 6th Great Lake, remember HOMES from the Canada leg of my trip?  The trip across the lake to Essex, NY, took 1/2 an hour, and the rain is still coming down.  There is a lot of fall colour in the Adirondack mountains, in fact all the scenery we pass is just gorgeous but it was too difficult to get good photo's through the rain on the windows.  As we arrive in Lake Placid, MJ told us a rather interesting fact about the high school here, it is the only high school in the US with a liquor license, but there is a very good reason for it.  It's not for the students, or the staff, but for the media personnel that were housed there during the Olympics.  The license has been kept in place just in case they get to host another Olympics.

We had  a photo stop at the ski jump, Enid, Freda and I stood on the winners blocks for a photo.  On arrival at our hotel we were treated once more to welcome drinks.  Went down to Howard Johnson's, commonly known as HoJo's, for dinner with Elaine, Colin & Kym.  We experienced a light flurry of snow which was nice.
