On arriving in Vermont we had a photo stop in
Montpelier,
the state's capitol. The statue atop the dome is
Ceres,
goddess of agriculture. Everywhere you go in Vermont you will see
pineapples on signs,
it is a sign of hospitality and one of the stories behind it
goes: When seafaring captains returned home, they required peace
and quiet with their families and didn't wish to be disturbed by
visitors. When the family were ready to receive visitors, a
pineapple was sliced and put on the front door step (stoop) to let
people know they were now welcome to visit.
Our next stop was at
Cold Hollow
Cider Mill, where we got to taste freshly made cider, icy cold and
very nice too. After an interesting talk by one of the owners we
were treated to an ice cream by MJ, soooooo good
Back on the bus the winner was announced to the quest to try to work
out MJ's name. Enid, Sandra and I got the first name right but
none of us guessed her middle name. Now, you're all probably
waiting with baited breath to know what it is but, if I told you, I'd
have to kill you. To be fair though, you never know who is going
to be planning a Cosmos tour and if you get MJ as your tour director
then we would have cheated wouldn't we, and in all fairness to everyone
I just can't bring myself to cheat. I hope that if you do choose
a Cosmos tour some time that you get MJ and Tom as your tour director
and driver, I can guarantee you a fantastic trip, very informative and
best of all, a lot of fun.
On arrival at the hotel I had dinner with MJ & Tom at Al's diner, a
real diner that looked like it had been the setting for Al's in Happy
Days, you expected to see Richie & The Fonz walk in any
minute. I couldn't get over how many fries fit in the box I
ordered but I didn't do too bad a job on devouring them. MJ was
quite impressed too.
