New Bedford

Monday 11th October

The 9am bus had me in New Bedford by 10.15.  A nice easy run, maybe because today is a public holiday here in the States, Columbus Day.  The fall colours were beautiful but, I decided not to take any photo's through the bus windows as I'm sure there will be lots to come when I start on the New England tour.  I bet you're all waiting eagerly for those photo's.   I arrived at the hotel far too early for check in but they allowed me to stow my luggage; 1 backpack and the netbook, and, armed with camera I took off to find some food.  Found a cafe that was open, filled the grumbling stomach then headed down to the port to check out the ferry schedule for Martha's Vineyard.

My hotel is a stone's throw from the pier, if you have a good arm that is, so it only took a few minutes to walk back to the hotel, and in my room by 12.15.  I checked with reception to see if there were any harbour tours but it seems I am a little late for those, they finished at the end of September, but the whale watching tours are still running.  After settling myself into my room, I took off again, with camera, and headed for the whaling museum.  I loved the area where they were restoring an old tall ship, took a heap of photo's of it.  I couldn't bring myself to watch the whaling movie, but the history of the whalers is fascinating.  I found the whale watch schedule at the museum and there's no way I'm going to get on that one, it started at 7am and Martha's Vineyard beckons for tomorrow.  I guess some of you are saying 'but the whale watching photo's would be much better to see'; but, I can whale watch at home and get you some good photo's, so for this trip you are stuck with Martha's.

After the museum I visited a couple of gift shops that were open, not much is today of course, and if any of you ever fancy a maritime theme for any of your rooms at home, this is the place to shop.  I could have bought a heap of stuff, couldn't get it home though so it's still in the shop.

Back at the hotel I got some more of the Canadian tour completed and uploaded, the train journey and Jasper.  11.40pm and I think I'd better get some sleep if I'm to be on time for the ferry tomorrow.
